True confessions of a wuss

So, first of all I want to say that I'm pretty much afraid of a lot of things.

Now, on to the rest of the blog. I've been gone from Maryland for about a month visiting my family and taking a vacation with my mom, dad, and sister Marissa. Our vacation was a cruise to the Mexican Riviera and Disneyland. On the vacation, I decided to take a few more risks. For example, for one of the shore excursions my sister went on an outdoor adventure run by Vallarta Adventures. The adventure began with a speedboat ride across the Bay of Banderas to Boca de Tomatlan. After that our group loaded into two Mercedes Benz Unimogs to take an off-road expedition to the base-camp (they say off-road, but we were on dirt roads, which isn't my definition of offroad).

We then road mules further up into the forest/jungle. My mule had this thing where it had to be in front. At the beginning we were 5th or 6th, and I could tell that the mule was impatient, but it was waiting. Then, one of the guides came up behind the horses and my mule decided enough was enough and he passed the other mules so that he could take the lead and set the pace. After that, any time he heard another mule on his heels, he took off so that he could be in the lead position.

After that came a series of zip lines, bridges, and two repelling experiences. We repelled down a waterfall and we had a free fall repelling experience. The guides did a wonderful job at keeping us safe, even though I wasn't very good at the zip lines. Now, you may ask, "how can one not be good at zip lines. My answer: Well, I wasn't very good at the braking part. I always didn't use the brakes enough, or else I used them too much. And on the repelling down the waterfall part, I wasn't really that great at following their directions about not bending my knees.

To finish off the experience we took the Unimog back to Boca de Tomatlan and then the powerboat back across Banderas Bay. It was a fun experience and I would definitely recommend the experience to others.

The trip gave me my second experience in kayaking. My sister and I shared a kayak, and my sister was making fun of me and getting frustrated with me the whole time. I would usually paddle on the right instead of the left when we wanted to turn right; I didn't put my oar in deep enough...I warned her before we went that I wasn't very good at it. I think I'd improved quite a bit by the end.

The trip also gave me my first experience with rock climbing. I've been meaning to try it for quite some time, but I never really could get up the nerve (or the money). Since the rock climbing wall was on the ship, use of it came free (there goes the first obstacle). Despite the no-cost, I still had to get up the nerve. I kept postponing. On the last day of the trip, my sister and I went up, but I just sat and watched as she climbed the wall. Then I sat and watched others...for about an hour. Finally, I decided I could give it a try. It really wasn't too bad, although I used my arms more than I was supposed to.

My final risk was on going on rides at Disneyland. I warned you. I'm a wuss. When I was younger the only roller coaster I went on was Big Thunderhead Mountain and one at Toon Town (which I remember not liking). So, this time I actually went on the Matterhorn (which is much milder that Big Thunderhead Mountain), and Space Mountain. No California Screaming this time, though. I'm still not ready for the upside down experience again (I didn't really enjoy the Collossus at Lagoon). I also tried out Splash Mountain for the first time (and was drying out for the rest of the day), and Hollywood Tower of Terror a couple of time (and everytime I sat down after that I kept waiting for the seat to drop a few stories).

Anyway, those are sum of my vacation adventures.

FHE Conversation

So, tonight I was at FHE and I had the following conversation (and thoughts).

Person 1: Hi. I don't think I know you. What's your name?
Me: Amanda. What's your name?
Person 1: Person 1*
Me: Hi., Person 1.

a few minutes pass...

Person 1: Amanda, did you watch the Alabama game?
Me: (weird look on my face, kinda random question to ask someone). Yes, but I liked the Texas game better
Person 1: Oh.
Me: Did you watch the Alabama game?
Person 1: No. I think you watched the game at my house, though.
Me: (Hmm, I don't remember seeing him at the house, and there were only 5 people there). Were you there?
Person 1: No. I was at the Ward activity.
Me: (Hmm, well I definitely left the house before the ward activity ended...)

Today's Cooking Experiment

Being that I like chocolate chip cookies (and avoiding homework), but also trying to be somewhat health conscious, today I started a chocolate chip cookie cooking experiment. What I am planning on doing is gradually substituting ingredients with slightly healthier ingredients and see if the taste is acceptable. Today was step one of the experiment. For this step of the experiment, I substituted the butter/margarine and vanilla with Light Vanilla Yogurt. It was better than the applesauce variant I tried in the past. The cookies were fluffier (which I like), and the taste of the dough and cookie is a bit different, but not too much different. I did add a little extra flour, and I didn't have quite enough yogurt on hand, so I did you a little butter. The plan for the next time I make the cookies: no margarine/butter (all yogurt), and try using only egg whites. I figger than due to the consistency of the yogurt, egg whites may not actually be necessary. Ideas after that include substituting the white sugar with brown sugar, and white flour with whole wheat flour and oatmeal. Feel free to experiment along with me, or let me know of experiments you have tried in the past that have worked great (or not so great).

For example, my brother and I once put red food coloring in a recipe that had hamburger in it. Most of the rest of the family wouldn't try it for soe strange reason (I think they said the meat looked raw), so that meant more for the two of us. So, depending on how you look at it, that experiment was a success.

A fresh start, once again

So, I've decided it's time for a fresh start in my life. Before this point, I was just thinking, um.. I'll just start after I graduate from school and leave Maryland. However, recent events, including General Conference have caused me to reconsider. My goals of my posts for the next while are going to focus on re-discovering and re-defining myself.

For the first time in a long time (or maybe the first time ever), I've been thinking about some of my life goals. I used to kinda be afraid of letting people know how nerdy I am, but I don't really care anymore. Instead, I am now going to embrace my nerdiness. In addition, I used to ask questions all of the time, and I stopped that, because I felt like it annoyed people, but I'm going to start asking questions again, and I'm going to start experimenting a little more. Also, I like board games -- especially Beyond Balderdash. And I like puzzles. I've watched a lot of movies over the past few years, but honestly, I'm not really a huge movie fan. Movies are just a way to pass time.

In general, I'm going to start living life, rather than just living in life. I'm sure I'll have my ups and downs, but if I make the goals, hopefully there will be something to help keep me on track. Also, beware, I'm going to give some of my opinions, including the negative ones, or the ones people don't like hearing. For example, I am going to finish nursing school, but I still don't know about the whole medical thing in general, maybe I'll go into healthcare, maybe I won't...There are a world of possibilities for life in my mind right now. Also, if anyone would like to make comments about what they like about the old/current Amanda and would not like to see her change, please feel free to post.

Finally, I'd like to thank family and friends for being there for me over these past few years even though I've been a bit of a downer. Particular thanks to my parents, siblings, Elizabeth, Sue and Les, Heidi, Lauren, Crystal, and Teresa. And I'm sorry if I've forgotten any of the other main ones, as I really may have.

And yes, I should be in class right now instead of writing my blog, but I put my keys in Crystal's purse yesterday so I wouldn't accidentally leave them at the church, and instead I accidently left them in her purse, so...no way to get to school.
